Stats SA found that irrespective of their marital status, men tended to marry women who had never been married before.

However, bachelors and widowers married either spinsters or widows, while divorcees showed a preference for spinsters or divorcees.

According to published data, the number of divorces between 1997 and 2006 fluctuated between 37 098 and 31 270 per annum.

The 2006 data revealed that more women than men instituted divorce proceedings.

However, among Africans, women initiated divorce proceedings as much as the men.

The number of divorces among whites rose sharply between those aged 25-29, and those aged 35-39.

Irrespective of the population group, most couples who got divorced were married for five to nine years.

In the statistics for 2006, marriages lasted for less than 15 years in 67,8 percent of all divorce1 cases.
